Currently the company has two plants, in Makata and Lunzu with an annual capacity estimated at 300,000 tons of cement.

Context of the Company

Portland Cement limited began its operation in Malawi in 1956. Operations were established at present Blantyre site with a nominal capacity of 15 tph, producing ordinary Portland cement with clinker imported from Zimbabwe. With growth in cement demand, exploration for limestone reserves began in 1960/61 culminating in the establishment of a clinker factory in Zomba about 100km NNE of Blantyre. The operation of changalume consisted of quarry, raw mill and kiln 220 tons per day capacity. A railway way of 25Km was also constructed from chingalume to join the Blantyre, Balaka, Nakala/Lilongwe line at a place called namatunu to take clinker to Blantyre.

Further expansion took place in 1970s to 1980s with the establishment of a 350 tpd capacity kiln at Changalume and subsequently in 1980 a second cement grinding mill of 25tph capacity at Blantyre which still runs today.

In 1996/97 the company which was 100% owned by the government through Malawi Development Corporation (MDC) was privatized and changed ownership to shareholders: Commonwealth Development (CDC) through a subsidiary company called Pan-African Cement Company Ltd (PAC) and Malawi Development Corporation (MDC) who held 76% and 24% respectively. PCA also owned similar companies in Tanzania and Zambia. In 2002 CDC sold its interest in PAC to Lafarge of France who owned 100% stake after MDC also sold its 24% to Lafarge. The company was a member of LafargeHolcim after a merger of Lafarge and Holcim in 2015. As part of expansion, in March 2021 Lafarge Holcim bought a third mill in Lunzu Blantyre which was previously known as Kulimba cement

In 2022 Lafarge sold its stake to a China based Huaxin Cement and it changed back to its original name “Portland Cement limited”. Huaxin Cement is among the 10 largest manufacturing companies with 115 million tons capacity. Huaxin own 13 similar companies outside China including Malawi.
